The Panorama of the Battle of Murten at GIFF Festival
The GIFF (Geneva International Film Festival), to be held in Geneva from 1 to 10 November 2024, will be the first time that the public will be able to see the progress made by EPFL in digitising and augmenting the Panorama of the Battle of Murten.
Since 2022, the Foundation has been supporting a vast digital project around this panorama painted by Louis Braun in 1894: ‘DigiPan’, led by the EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne). After restoring it, the team from the School's experimental museology laboratory, eM+, under the direction of Sarah Kenderdine, has completely digitised it. It is the largest digital image in the world, measuring 1,000 m2.
A few months ago, the eM+ laboratory moved on to the stage of ‘augmenting’ the painting, offering immersion in the panorama, infinite zoom, 3D visualisations of the objects represented, sounds and even smells. This experience will be available for visits every day of the festival, as part of the Virtual Territories I: Swissphoria programme. A narration in French, English, Italian and German is provided by eM+.
